Home for the Holidays

Some people love to entertain. Others want rest and relaxation that comes from quiet, deliberate privacy. But the homeowners of this exquisite 8,000 square-foot beach house wanted both. When they hired Paul Harris of Cole Harris Associates in Westport (www.coleharris.com), they put quite a few conflicting architectural challenges on his plate. The wife is a gourmet cook, she and her husband love hosting groups of varying ranges of attendance, anywhere from 8 to 80 people. So the guests needed to feel as if there were areas they could gravitate toward that were both intimate and expansive. And the family loves boating, so the home Harris designed for them in 2005 had to welcome both small and large groups of hungry boaters after a sail. Herein lies the challenge. How do you create a space that is accommodating and yet cozy?

N aturally it is primordial to keep a visual balance within the space; it comforts the eye and discreetly prevents an immediate perception of the individual elements, offering a more distinguished visual perception of the room.

A stunning eighteen Century style French writing desk, purposively oversized to balance the weight of the piano offers as well a great working surface for reading large books or writing.  The piano and the writing desk were placed in parallel angles to leave the walkways between the doors available for passage.

A very elegant black velvet daybed with gold contrasting welt was designed to create a perpendicular balance for the weight of the piano and the desk as well as to give a great functional piece to listen to music or read.
